Winter
2005-2006 Newsletter
Dear Friends,
Happy holiday season to you!
I hope this finds you in good health and good spirits.
We had another very fulfilling and
exciting year. Perhaps
the most exciting news is that we have a new Executive
Director! After
founding the shelter and guiding it for over 20 years, Sister
Norberta has decided to pass the baton.
Luckily for us, Sister is staying with us.
In her new capacity, Sister will lead our social
service delivery programs.
We thank you Sister for your unending enthusiasm,
dedication, motivation, and leadership.
It inspires us all.
Our new Executive Director,
Jaclyn Cherubini
, joined our team in October 2004 initially as our Business
Manager. Over the
past year, Ms. Cherubini has done an admirable job of managing
the day-to-day financial and operational demands of our
various programs.
Prior to joining us, Ms. Cherubini was
involved in numerous non-profit organizations providing food,
shelter, and permanent housing to the homeless; raising public
awareness for women’s issues, specifically regarding
domestic violence; serving the creative and therapeutic needs
of children in domestic violence shelters and foster care; and
raising funds for the performing arts.
Ms. Cherubini is currently attending
Long Island
University
, Brooklyn Campus, earning a Masters of Public Administration
with a concentration in Non-Profit Management.
Please join me in offering Sister
Norberta and Ms. Cherubini congratulations as they embark on
their new endeavors. We
all look forward to the next era of providing a safe haven for
our guests and helping those in our community that are less
fortunate than us.
Thank you for your support.
It is vital to our success.
Without you, our ministry is diminished.
Together we can achieve great things.
Sincerely,
Michael Takano
Board President

Program
News
The Hoboken Shelter’s four main programs
are:
I. FOOD & SHELTER:
The shelter serves evening meals to
everyone who arrives at our door for approximately 100 people
per night, provides breakfast and lunches daily to shelter
residents, and provides overnight shelter to 30 men and 20 women
nightly. Shelter
Residents also receive the following case management services:
Drug & Alcohol Counseling, Budget Counseling,
Medication Counseling, and Emergency Clothes.
II. INTEGRATED LIVING PROGRAM:
The Integrated Living Program (ILP) has
been in operation since 1998.
The program provides addiction counseling, health care
and job readiness/life skills training, in conjunction with an
arts program to help participants heal from the isolating,
demoralizing experience of homelessness while learning how to
articulate personal goals and build self-esteem.
The program consists of the following workshops:
Job & Life Skills, Relaxation and Anchoring, Computer
Literacy, Mentoring & Tutoring, Alumni Support, Visual Arts,
Creative Writing, Chess, & Yoga.
III. INTENSIVE DAY TREATMENT PROGRAM:
The
Intensive Day Treatment Program (IDTP) is a therapeutic
day program. It
provides services to Mentally Ill and/or Chemical-Abusing (MICA)
clients who are currently homeless.
It meets with
MICA participants weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays,
from
9am
to
3pm
. The services are
provided by two St. Mary Hospital Case Managers under the
supervision of The Hoboken Shelter.
IV. HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION PROGRAM:
The Homelessness Prevention Program
provides rental and utility assistance grants to people facing
imminent eviction, counseling for tenant rights, and referrals
to appropriate agencies.
